The Mozilla Manifesto

The Mozilla Manifesto Pledge for a Healthy Internet describes the internet as a global resource with incredible potential for learning, collaboration, and solving problems. At the same time, it recognizes how the internet has also been used to spread misinformation, division, and hate. To protect its future, Mozilla lays out ten principles that emphasize openness, privacy, transparency, and a balance between commercial interests and the public good.

What stands out to me is how much the addendum stresses that a healthy internet doesn’t just exist on its own, but requires deliberate effort from individuals, organizations, and communities. I agree especially with the focus on privacy and inclusivity, since so much of the internet today feels shaped by companies that profit from user data and limit access. The pledge makes clear that the internet isn’t only a technical system but also a social and cultural space. Its health depends on the choices we make about how it should serve people, and whether we prioritize openness and the public good over control and profit.
